Short Film: Forgotten Love

The task was to create a short film about any subject, and it could only have up to 6 lines of dialogue.

Our short film is called Forgotten Love.

It is about a relationship between a couple, which changes drastically after an event occurs.

A rebellious and bad-mannered guy upsets his girlfriend, so she finally decides to break up their relationship. Apparently the guy has cheated on her various times, and she’d forgiven him each time, but she has had enough, so she decides to meet up with her boyfriend and break it off for once. When she leaves the location, the guy stays there and thinks about his actions, seemingly willing to change, but the girl doesn’t know. He eventually walks off. As the girl is walking, she hears a car crash. She finds out that the guy had gotten into the accident and has partial amnesia as a result. She decides to take care of him and use this chance to change him for the better, struggling with her past memories about him at the same time. He is not the same uncouth person anymore, but the girl has doubts about simply forgetting the past. At the end, she questions whether she can continue doing this.

At the pre-production period of the project our group had various issues. The group was comprised of 5 persons, but we had disagreements regarding the theme and setting of our short film, so we decided to split up. Because of this, all of us had lost a lot of time, so my group had to brainstorm a fresh idea for our film. This time it didn’t take very long because we easily made compromises and planned everything for the project.
We encountered other issues later. When we went filming the first time, a group member changed the settings on the camera, and in the end we couldn’t capture any footage of that day. The next time we went filming, we had some misunderstandings regarding the shots, and ended up not using any footage from that day either. We had lost a lot of time again, so we needed to get it finished quickly. The last time we went filming, we captured a lot of footage, and we were very pleased with it. We got all the filming done in that single day.
I took upon the role of the camerawoman, for the most part, and also kept everything organized and made sure we hadn’t missed anything. Jason and Polina were the main actors. Regarding the pre-production work, we divided it equally, and no one was slacking.

We created the soundtracks and edited the footage individually, so we each have a different video. I didn’t record any sound effects or music myself, but I created it with loops in Logic because they are copyright free.
We needed a few lines of dialogue to be recorded separately from filming, because it was very windy on the day of filming, making the vocals sound rough and distorted. We booked a recording studio and recorded several attempts, making sure we had plenty of backups. Some of the lines were part of a voiceover, the others had to be lipsynced to the video. We may use different lines each, thus creating the story and idea individually, but keeping within the original storyline.
I think the main issue which caused all the problems was lack of organization and mutual understanding. If we had discussed everything clearly from the beginning, I’m sure we would’ve finished the project a lot sooner within the larger group.
Another issue may have been the number of people in the same group. I prefer to work with fewer people because it’s a lot easier to discuss our ideas and come to a final conclusion. It does mean we have more work on our hands, but I think that’s not as big an issue if we can get everything finished before the deadline and be confident with our idea. I find it harder to express my opinion within a larger group because I don’t feel like the majority would consider it, and several conflicts may arise due to the disagreements between more dominant people, so I was quite satisfied with our small group and the progress we made at the end.
